There are several examinations that you should take in order to get the license. One of them is the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The scores of the exam must come from Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). And, if you use Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS), it will include those scores, as well.

If you need to take the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examinations (NBOME), the scores will come from the National Board. The scores of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) will also come from the National Board.

If you need to take the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC), the scores of it must also come from LMCC. And, if you need to take a state examination, the scores of it must come from the agency, which maintains your scores.

What should I include in the application?

After that, you will need to write and present very accurate and detailed information about your professional life. You must mention all the internships, fellowships, and certificates you have obtained.

How can I complete the online application?

You can complete the online application here.

The application fee is $302. The fee is non-refundable. You can pay the fee by using Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. If you complete the application without paying the fee, the Board may not consider it. If you have missed any items, the application will not be acknowledged. And, if you do not complete your application within 12 months, it will expire and the Board may not notice it.

When you submit your application, it does not guarantee that you already have the license. You should wait until getting the official response. As, sometimes, the applicant may be considered ineligible for the license. It can happen according to Virginia laws and regulations.

Application by Endorsement

Getting an application by Endorsement greatly varies from getting it through traditional way. This one is easier and not so long-lasting. This type of application requires less supporting documentation, as well. There are several requirements you should meet to get the licensure by Endorsement:

You must hold minimum of one current and unlimited license in a Canadian or United States jurisdiction. You should have held it for five years before applying for the licensure. It is very important to verify whether these licenses are in good standing. They must be defined as current and unlimited. And, if there are any problems with the licenses, you should check whether they are eligible for renewal and reinstatement, or not.

You must have been engaged in active practice, which should be as an average of 20 hours per week. It can also be defined as about 650 hours per year. You should have this practice after postgraduate training for five years.

There are a number of certifications that you must hold before applying for the licensure. You should have at least one of them in order to be eligible for the license. Here is the list of current certifications:

  • American Board of Medical Specialties
  • Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists
  • American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Canada
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada

If you have already verified your eligibility for the application by Endorsement, you can apply for that. But, you need to know that the Board may find any of the required criteria unmet. In this case, your application will move to the traditional pathway, which takes more time and more patience.
